Inspired directly by Aperture, Smith’s first color-shifting work created during his artist residency at the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2010, the Lightworks create unique, intimate experiences in color, form, surface, and change. Formally focused as Torus or Lozenge shapes, each new iteration builds upon the former, expanding Smith’s dialogue on and investigation of color. Set to precisely delineated paces, brightnesses, and colors, Smith sees these works as highly specific three-dimensional canvases that he paints with light and that are durationally experienced.
