Located at the Wilburton station, one of ten new stations along Sound Transit’s line from Downtown Bellevue to Microsoft, Four Corners Extruded defines a vertical canvas for light and reflection in the midst of a busy urban plaza and a rapidly changing part of the City. Two planes turned at 90 degrees from each other (a “plus sign” in plan view) creates four extruded, reflective corners aligned with the cardinal directions. Elevated 10’ off the ground, the monolithic sculpture collages the changing sky and treetops across its surface during the day. At dusk, the colors emerge, combining with reflection to create tinted views of the environment. By night, the colors appear to float, breaking apart the monolithic canvas into a series of shifting fields of color. The reflective space of each corner merges North with West, West with South, and so on, as Four Corners Extruded moves through the unique color choreography created onsite by Smith. Inspired by the spectrum of colors represented by the lit sky as well as the pace of viewing a sunset, the artwork’s focused experience contrasts against the adjacent speed of the highway, transit line, and pedestrians.
