Smith’s ten original 6’ diameter x 2’ deep low sheen white Portals were first exhibited within his 85’ diameter pavilion of light created for the 2016 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Since that time, Smith developed similarly scaled works, the Flat Torus works, as flatter, more complex iterations of his ongoing Lightworks series. Inspired by the site conditions for a private commission acquired in early 2020, Smith merged the complexity of composition and density of color of his Flat Torus works with the formal exuberance of his Portals series in Portal - Variant 1, his first new work in the series since 2016.
